My Ski for MS/CanDo Multiple Sclerosis story:
On March 7, 2020 while my dad was quarantined at Travis after being on the Grand Princess, I was already freaking out about how Covid was going to change everything, and I didn't think I had the energy to ski. But, I made a commitment and wanted to honor my mom who's life was cut short by MS. So, I took to the slopes with Johnny Mosley (yeah probably part of my motivation). It was cold and snowing and then turned to whiteout conditions by noon with high winds that closed all lifts at the top of Squaw. Most participants were off the slopes by 1 pm. According to NOAA historic data the temperature was around 25 degrees and it dumped 10 inches of snow. Despite this cold and wind, I persevered and I won the vertical challenge in a whiteout. I was actually given the gold medal for most vertical feet at a ceremony (really actually a party) at the Aud Dubliner. Our team also got a silver medal. It was the last party I attended and I hold on to that memory as one of the best days of the year. That day I skied 15,479 vertical feet within 4 hours 26 minutes.
Side Bet: Will I crush the 15,479 or will it be an epic fail?
On Wednesday the 24th it looks like there will be no snow, but it will be cold with a prediction of 26-46. I expect the whole mountain to be open, which lends itself to more vertical feet. I will plan to track my skiing the same amount of time: 4 hours and 26 minutes. I will NOT be bombing the black diamonds and will likely stick to mostly blues. My skis are not waxed or tuned. I also had 15 ski days in when I won the challenge. This year, it's zero.
Want in on the action? Place your bets!
1. Guess the amount of vertical feet I will ski. Those who are within 1500 feet of my actual number will win a prize. If no one is within 1500 vertical feet, then the closest number will win a prize. Bets can be placed by responding to this email or sending me a text before 9 am on Wednesday, March 24th.
2. Your number will determine how ambitious you think I will be. If you guess over 15,479 vertical feet, then you will be lumped with the group that thinks I may be too ambitious for my own good. If you choose a number that is under, then you will be with the "Karen might get too cold and stuck her feet in the firepit by noon" group. The winning group gets bragging rights. The number of people in the losing group will determine the final amount that the anonymous donor has to give.
